Recently I learned: Plato's Akademy was founded in ~387 BCE, in or beside a little olive grove a mile northwest of Athens. It lasted 301 years, before the olive grove was cut down in ~86 BCE to make siege engines, by the roman dictator Sulla.

Endless curiosity is perhaps the most honest answer. I do, however, have a more specific interest in long-lived institutions and structures, what makes some things last, and others not.

I put the list of lamest edit wars in simply because I find it amusing. But upon more reflection: it's at least a little related to issues around the consent of the governed, and long-lived institutions.
