“A study of 1,300 Northern California Kaiser patients who tested positive for the coronavirus last month found that nearly 1/3 were hospitalized and almost 1/10 ended up in intensive care — and younger and middle-aged adults were almost as likely to be admitted as people age 60+https://twitter.com/sfchronicle/status/1253893431602053120 …

That quote as presented in the article feels misleading because the median age of those admitted was 61 (63 for patients who went to ICU)

It is definitely misleading & without understanding the real rate of hospitalizations & fatalities across age groups, esp w/ or w/out health conditions, it's distorting things. If California DOES have different rates compared to other states it would be good to understand why.

Is there value in such limited sample set data? I believe the hospitalization rate across CA is 3%? And while not available for CA, this MA data is very different in terms of the age breakdown for hospitalizations. And deaths are overwhelmingly skewed >70.https://twitter.com/jenneraub/status/1252790924695855109 …

Another question is, is there value in using a research letter in place of actual data? It seems this is the most valuable takeaway: "Adults across age groups, not just elderly individuals, required inpatient care, with persons aged 60 to 69 years most commonly hospitalized"

Not quite what the studies indicated. Bad headline/summary.

This is very different than other states, is there any thinking behind why California is having such a disparate experience with younger people being hospitalized? Data coming out of Massachusetts and NY paint a very difference experience for the demographics in their states.

I wonder what selection bias there is in who gets tested. Still, it certainly means that being young doesn't shield you from suffering the worst of it.
