We've known about several other coronaviruses for decades now. A few cause colds while others cause significant disease (MERS-COV and SARS-COV-1). We don't have a vaccine for any coronavirus yet. Some say this is because it hasn't been a top priority.
A vaccine for HIV has been a top priority for the world so just prioritizing a vaccine may not be the answer. There is a chance that it'll take longer to develop a vaccine then we're hoping. That said, there are several promising vaccine platforms that didn't exist in the 90s.
An HIV vaccine was harder task than CoV vaccine - HIV is hypermutable However, same range of approaches more or less existed then (except for Moderna, which in some sense is most similar to DNA vaccines) My meta-point is people strike me as overly optimistic on timeframes
Are you more optimistic about antivirals? Both in terms of timeline as well as impact on everyday life?
We still do not have vaccines for SARS or MERS, and the flu vaccine efficacy is dismal...broadly speaking, we’ve not been good at virus vaccines for decades...maybe this one will be different
