And like... there used to be a labor press that could do the hard hitting, so the mainstream newspapers were establishment vehicles. Then the labor and alt press went away... and all that was left was Fast Company profilings the Doritos innovation lab

I also suspect there are a few things going on with tech specifically. Big tech has swallowed entire markets, everyone lives on screens, etc. Traditionally that pervasiveness of power, however indirect, has been an invitation to especial scrutiny (probably fairly).

semi-off-topic but I think this is why Trump is so perplexed by politician coverage. He thought “journalism” was real estate puffery and NY Post bartering for positive coverage.
