We feel compelled to start reporting on this crisis's impact on Oakland now, nearly two months sooner than planned.
We've joined forces with our colleagues at @berkeleyside, who have been producing stellar reporting on the coronavirus and the shutdown for weeks.

We have formed a rapid-response team to cover COVID-19 in Oakland and to share the stories at
@berkeleyside's website (ours is still under construction!), as well as through our Oakland newsletter, which you can sign up for below:https://www.berkeleyside.com/oakland/2 replies 7 retweets 24 likesShow this thread -
As part of this mission, I’m happy to share a bit of excellent news in challenging times:
@DarwinBondGraha, a tenacious Oakland journalist who has covered some of the city’s most complex stories over the past decade, has joined our Oakland newsroom.11 replies 15 retweets 187 likesShow this thread -
@DarwinBondGraha's very first story was published yesterday, an in-depth look at how front-line healthcare workers at Oakland’s public Highland Hospital—including housekeeping workers and emergency room nurses—are responding to the pandemic.https://www.berkeleyside.com/2020/03/26/overcrowded-in-normal-times-highland-hospital-braces-itself-for-covid-19 …1 reply 6 retweets 34 likesShow this thread -
We are honored to bring
@DarwinBondGraha's expertise in public-records-driven journalism to this newsroom, and to provide a home for his sharply honed sense of Oakland’s information needs.2 replies 1 retweet 25 likesShow this thread -
We have also hired our new Managing Editor, and I so look forward to telling you much more about them soon.

We're continuing to interview reporters, but are pressing “pause,” temporarily, on filling three of the five full-time reporting positions we announced in February. We're also delaying the launch of our standalone web platform until our team is safely able to work together IRL.

We feel the responsible way forward is to continue to grow, but to grow more slowly than planned before the outbreak. If you applied for a position in our Oakland newsroom and I haven't been in touch within the past couple of weeks, you'll be hearing directly from me today.

We appreciate your support for the vision and values that we bring to both our current coverage in close partnership with
@berkeleyside, and to our long-term commitment to a standalone newsroom wholly devoted to this city. More on those values here:https://www.berkeleyside.com/oakland/#values-guiding-our-work …1 reply 0 retweets 10 likesShow this thread -
In the meantime, we’d love to hear more about how the outbreak is affecting your life, your family, and your community in Oakland. Please feel free to respond, or email with any tips or reflections you have to share. We may reach out for future stories. tasneem@berkeleyside.com

Is it still going to be called @berkeleyside if it's an Oakland story and staff?

Replying to @kimmaicutler @berkeleyside
Yes absolutely. We're publishing our Oakland coverage at the
@berkeleyside website for now, since our own isn't ready. Once our Oakland platform is up and running, we'll start publishing there. Like everyone, we're all getting creative and making the best of difficult times!0 replies 0 retweets 4 likesThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
