The Bay Area likely has way more than 539 cases. New York has run about 4X as many tests as CA according to the (excellent!) COVID tracking project: https://covidtracking.com/data/#CA https://twitter.com/kimmaicutler/status/1242629613882183682 …

I think this visualization is somewhat helpful. NY is way above the line, CA is right on it. So comparatively NY has more positive cases given the number of tests they've done.https://twitter.com/austingmeyer/status/1242660102152257537?s=20 …

And CA’s positive rate so far (13.5%) is way below NY’s (28%!) and about the same as the national average (15%). As of a few days ago, UCSF’s rate was only ~4%. Definitely under-measuring, but probably not as much as NY despite the lower number of tests.https://twitter.com/bob_wachter/status/1240860132193361921 …

Yeah, and NYC has 2853 hospitalized cases https://www1.nyc.gov/assets/doh/downloads/pdf/imm/covid-19-daily-data-summary.pdf … whereas similarly sized LA County had 90 yesterday https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-03-24/coronavirus-hospitals-los-angeles-county … and UCSF has all of nine right nowhttps://twitter.com/Bob_Wachter/status/1242601986949697537 …

Bay Area having much lower population density and less reliance on public transit could be differentiating factors.

This is the only metric worth discussing until we are all on the same page with testing

I’ve talked to quite a few SFBA doctors and while it’s not business as usual, there isn’t panic or hospitals being overrun. Some PPE is low. But you don’t see Gavin Newsom being panicked (yet). We know a few people who have it, but most are testing -ve.

Many tech companies starting WFH in Feb ... BART and SF traffic was already lower by then. Individual action in the Bay area has led county and state action, which is how it should be in a free country.
