Yes. Though the US has never experienced anything on this scale in our lifetimes. *If* Harvard’s Lipsitch’s projection of 40% infection rates is right, and *if* all infected develop the disease — at a 2% fatality rate & 320M people we’re talking 2.5 million dead in the US alone.

To be clear that projection is based on those premises, which could be wrong. Indeed we should all hope they are wrong, that it’s less bad in the West for whatever reason — less air pollution perhaps, maybe less immunocompromised lungs. But we have to take this seriously.

Are you seeing an uptake in people taking
#Covid_19 seriously? I’m seeing some people with large platforms basically writing it off and saying it isn’t serious. On that note, I wonder if latent racist thinking (not yours) about Chinese hygiene etc is allowing people to dismiss it1 reply 0 retweets 0 likes -
Yes, it’s finally being discussed by the political class. SF declared a state of emergency, CDC has told all Americans to prepare. Markets have started to price it. President and presidential candidates have been tweeting about it. Better late than never, maybe Italy moved them.

What do you make of China seeming to relax its restrictions to get the economy moving?

A huge experiment. A few possibilities: 1) They really have it under control 2) They don’t have it under control, but want to cover it up as they did in Wuhan in December 3) They don’t have it under control and can’t cover it up as it breaks out again at undeniable scale

Maybe there’s some other option (4), like one of their fast-track clinical trials is really working or they have confidence in a new vaccine. We’ll all see soon.

My greatest concern is whackos on the environmental left spreading this deliberately as a means toward "saving the Earth" from evil humans. Something similar has already happened in South Korea.
