You've seen @candacejackson write about billion dollar parcels and $500 million homes. Now see her write about... Antioch. Fun story about the East Bay's last affordable BART stop. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/25/realestate/antioch-california.html …

Antioch built more than twenty thousand market-rate housing units in the 1990s and 2000s (albeit sprawl). Imagine if the Peninsula, San Francisco, and Berkeley had built tens of thousands of units of infill during the same time period.

The amount of unpaid hours spent getting ready for work and then commuting from far distances is a untold story.

"The commuter city has long grappled with the opposite problem that much of the Bay Area faces: plenty of housing, not enough jobs." Opportunity for businesses to set up shop in Antioch?

My wife and I considered Antioch briefly - $250k for a regular house? $450 for a mansion? - but instead bought in San Jose because I could not stomach the idea of driving 1.5 hours each way in good traffic to Sunnyvale for work. Now considering leaving altogether and remote work.

We are very fortunate to be able to afford the stratospheric price of housing here, even on only one income. I remain bewildered and thankful for the blessings I have received. But instead of thriving you merely survive.

It’s wild that folks commenting on Palo Alto housing threads are explicitly defending this system

SF resoundingly rejected plans in the 60s & 70s to prepare for future need that would have avoided much of what happened because "we won't be like NY!" How's that working out, #PearlClutchers?

Never in a million years would i have thought that "Antioch" and "NYTimes Real Estate Section" would be something that I'd read together.

The place very much has a culture that is separate from alot of the Bay Area. If you're a transplant whose local knowledge of the Bay includes SF, SV, and maybe Oakland, Antioch is *not* what you know. A very unique ethnic history. Strong Okie/Dustbowl migrant heritage.
