*huge* deal for the Mission 1979 started trend of opposing big projects in neighborhood & has always been biggest prize for activists if Mission Housing buys this, it'd be second major housing dev. in Mission (after 1515 SVN) to switch to 100% affordablehttps://missionlocal.org/2020/02/monster-mashed-developer-pulls-plug-on-contentious-1979-mission-project-puts-land-up-for-sale/ …

Mission activism against market-rate netted 130 affordable units at 681 Florida (opposing "Beast on Bryant") & 157 units at 1515 SVN (opposing "Titanic Mess on South Van Ness") if they got 1979 Mission, it'd be hundreds that wouldn't be there without the pressure (& city $$$)

also as
@sammymoss425 &@eparillon pointed out, 81 units at 490 SVN, which led the pack back in 2015 when city bought it for an at-the-time record breaking $18.5 million after activists pushed for ill-fated Mission moratoriumhttps://missionlocal.org/2015/07/72-south-van-ness-condos-will-now-be-affordable-housing/ …1 reply 0 retweets 1 likeShow this thread -
Obviously more affordable units is good. But also market rate units are a public good - not as good as affordable ones, but not bad.

I’m not tracking SF closely so more of a general question... does all this actually result in more actual units being built? Or is it just moving the same limited city/non profit funds around?

Eg, assume that the owner sells the land for the $42m as is offered - is that $42m new money for affordable land purchases? or is it $42m that would have been available for it regardless?

Are you sure? I’m not asking a rhetorical question. it’s possible these groups are raising funds specific to the project that wouldn’t be available for some reason for another project.

the sf budget process is going to be interesting this year to say the least, given the status of CCSF, layoffs at SFUSD, a $420M budget deficit....
