I feel like we don't talk enough about how quickly, relatively speaking, SF transformed from counterculture/LSD fueled creative nexus to postmodern hyper-capitalist dystopia, where literally all anyone cares about are startups/disruption & megacorp game of thrones.

The pervasive idea of a 'transformation' from psychadelic counterculture to neoliberal distopia ought to be more carefully examined. The counterculture as manifested in SF was a turn away from collective action through government channels in favor of hands-off libertarianism.

I don't think you can really describe SF as having "hands-off libertarianism" lol

I was talking about the legacy of 60s counterculture, and the point was that it was a turn away from politics and established forms of leftist resistance to the social harms of “hyper-capitalism”

Cool story, but it just doesn’t line up with the reality of SF politics, which has two parties: Socialist, and “I don’t vote”. Maybe I’m misunderstanding you.

Well, from that take I think you’re misunderstanding San Francisco politics more generally. But I think the original post was about the legacy of the cultural phenomenon known as the counterculture, which I was asserting was more laissez faire than leftist

Replying to @DanRaile @JTremback and
In other words that it could be more a direct line from LCD/counterculture to Hyper-capitalist dystopia than it is a stunning transformation.
