The example of principled privacy norms in Germany is a great argument *against* Merkels free speech stance. Privacy is so strongly fought for *because* of horrors of Gestapo and Stasi. Shouldn't the same be true for freedom of speech due to crippling of speech during the 3Reich?

I'm German and it doesn't make sense to me that any politician would ask for a law which could limit speech and enable governments like the Nazis or GDR to use it as weapon against its citizens - especially when an extremely right wing party is already polling at 13% right now
