A book review I half-recall described sort of what these people seem to want as to be "barbarians living on the edge of empire"—having its spoils available without being subject to its control

It gets worse with local Sierra Clubs. I applied for the E-Board for the Tri-Valley Group. You have to get through a nomination committee in order to even let the club vote on who is on the E-Board. This is their way of ensuring only certain people can be E-Board members.
