This is interesting. Staff took 3 nearly identical real Berkeley houses w/ vastly different assessed values due to purchase dates. Here's what each pays in BUSD taxes. Most are based on sq. footage. But the bond is based on value. For each, BUSD makes up 15-20% of prop. tax bill. pic.twitter.com/kG9aGctPEV

If only we hiked everyone's property taxes 4X then CA would have great schools, roads, no homeless, better parks and more cops.

In 60 years some neighbors will pay 32x more in property tax for similar houses. In 300 years, some neighbors will pay 503x more. Totally sane system. #ThanksProp13https://twitter.com/nextdoorsv/status/1126200370781409281 …

Today, some homeowners pay 10x (that's 10 times) a neighbor each year in property tax. 300 years from now, that grows to a multiple of 503x in property tax. $489K versus $246M Thank you voters in 1978 California for #Prop13! How will the state survive this? pic.twitter.com/uNFT7tQIlT

What if someone doesn’t have kids? I assume they still pay the school taxes?

But at the same time the current system gives many wealthy homeowners a break they don’t need, and prices lower income people out of the market or newcomers out of their homes, also sometimes resulting in homelessness. Tax protections should be based on need, not longevity.

The property tax system is so badly broken. Fixing it is really hard. Some of my neighbors bought 20-30 years ago and are stuck; can’t move. If they did move across town they couldn’t afford the 10-20x increase in prop tax. So they stay, even though they don’t want to. 🤷‍♂️
