A related point: there is no race in SimCity. No redlining. No denial of services, except in the most abstract of senses. Don’t get me wrong—I don’t think SimCity should allow you to racially discriminate as part of its core game mechanics.

But there’s a problem if you’re using SimCity—which does not have those dynamics in its “simulation”—as an analogy to understand how actual real-world urban planning and governance works.

The *other* problem is that SimCity in particular is a simulation of the urban dynamics of a city in *Southern California.* There’s a reason why, if you ever play SimCity, it’s almost impossible to get your Sims to use public transit without mods.

David Austin Walsh Retweeted Cameron Zinsou

This is actually an important point: public transit is much easier to build and more effective in Cities: Skyline. Unlike the SoCal developers of SimCity, the developer of Cities: Skyline is Finnish and the publisher is Swedish.https://twitter.com/Cgzinsou/status/1190625498147303424?s=20 …

The biggest sin of all, he's invoking SimCity and not Cities: Skylines, a superior game.

All of which is to say that our assumptions about politics are embedded in these video games, and can reinforce those assumptions because video games act as mediators of how we perceive reality.

What’s especially funny is that when you read Buttigieg’s SimCity quotes in context, what he wants are the more or less useless indicator bars that all but the newest players ignore in favor of overlays and traffic patterns.pic.twitter.com/WomTZDDPzN

Anyone who has ever had to use Chartbeat knows just how quickly “easy to use, info at a glance, data driven!” UIs can destroy critical thinking and lead to perverse incentives.
