it would apparently cost almost a quarter trillion bucks to bury just PG&E's distribution lines https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2019/10/11/bury-california-power-lines-wildfire-blackout-fix-unlikely-work/3946935002/ …

There is not sufficient supply of labor to accomplish the work.

How much to better manage existing routes without undergrounding? That means trimming, burying where needed (not everywhere), adding insulators or swapping for metal poles (like SDG&E did in some areas). We shouldn't set the 100% option as the analysis point right away.

I would actually probably say they’re comparable in cost on a per household basis. In the Bay Area, it’s like $3-10K to remove a mature Euc tree, for example. And with veg removal, it’s not a one-time thing. It’s like a haircut you have to do every year.

This number is misleading. The important question is how much would it cost to underground distribution and transmission lines in the high fire threat areas designated by the CPUC. This is a significantly smaller area than all of PG&E's territory (see red below):pic.twitter.com/i6MgR44fFm

And it also may be more expensive per mile bc of terrain.

I'll bet "nearly a quarter dollar" that the number phrasing is sneaky. I also will bet a WHOLE dollar that it's an investment that would pay off in reduced fires, less loss of life, fewer downed poles/lines, reduced economic losses from forced shutoffs and street beautification.

Folks will really start staying away from California if the fires get worse year by year. Companies would leave, jobs would leave. It's a critical investment in the health and safety of the whole state.
