People can’t afford to view it as anything but a stopover. The only people I know who stay long-term have family from here (and they often live and even raise kids in their parents’ home or they’re phenomenally wealthy.)

Indeed! I grew up with four family members, then later three, in a one-bedroom apartment. The City was my backyard, my living room, my "play room," wit endless festivals, rec centers, and delights. The need for space, in my estimation, is wildly overrated.
