We have a wealth tax on the middle class and upper middle class known as 'property taxes' and it has not been repealed. It's weird that taxing the politically connected super-wealthy has so many implementation issues.https://twitter.com/AndrewYang/status/1177907899105984514 …

We should learn from other countries. Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands and Sweden all tried a wealth tax and then repealed it, mainly because of the implementation issues and that it did not generate as much revenue as projected.

I’m assuming they still have to pay property tax on that even if they are avoiding other kinds of tax. https://www.lincolninst.edu/sites/default/files/pubfiles/a-good-tax-full_2.pdf …

Your point isn't wrong. It's impossible to move land and someone has to own it and there are going to be records. My point isn't wrong either.

I think it’s an administratively harder kind of tax to dodge than others. Not impossible but harder. At least these dodges are more visible.

Like we can look up any parcel and see its assessment. You can’t check people’s income or wealth (unless you’re Finland where people’s personal taxes are a matter of public record).

Isn't it ultimately a statement of values? If you believe that someone with over 50M should pay more and you make it the rule, it clearly communicates what kind of accumulation you find acceptable. It is ultimately super sad to move to a different country purely for tax reasons

During the neoliberal era rich people have been hailed as "job creators", "innovators", "philanthropists", with the ultimate intent to make it sound like they are somehow better (and thus deserving of their place). A wealth tax seems to be refute to those notions

"unless you’re Finland where people’s personal taxes are a matter of public record..." So... make billionaire tax returns a matter of public record.

Property taxes, especially land taxes are not the same as chasing other forms of property around the world.
