If the US is “democratically backsliding”, does that mean you believe it was more of a “democracy” when was doing drone strikes or invading Iraq? Empire is a description of external force projection and footprint. Democracy is an internal governance structure. "More of an empire ... " creates an artificial dichotomy. The US is an empire that till recently was governed by democratic laws and norms. It's not either/or.

This is a pretty weak editorial and completely misses why Kashmir recently became an issue again and Modi's stances. I like how it casually puts some things in a list and never revists them (Japan and S Korea)
