over 5 months I talked to 47 current/ex Google employees 2 make sense of the past 3 yrs inside Google: fear of the far right, activist awakening, compromises in search of revenue, weaponized leaks it's the WIRED cover story‼️ read the heck out of it (pls)https://www.wired.com/story/inside-google-three-years-misery-happiest-company-tech …

This is a very important story, Nitasha. Thank you for writing it. I miss the Google that genuinely wants to do good. “To many employees, it's axiomatic: Facebook is craven, Amazon is aggro, Apple is secretive, and Microsoft is staid, but Google genuinely wants to do good.”

employees (mostly long time employees) used examples like: G being more trustworthy with user data than other companies, extending services to more people around the world, execs being genuinely concerned about not doing evil. but good/evil not clearly defined. neoliberalism?!

all those land in “don’t be evil” territory. i cannot point to a single thing that .com did where the intent was “do good.” do stuff that’s technically interesting, do stuff that increases growth, do stuff that makes work easier, but never, save things that .org did, “do good.”

on the whole, it’s probably better to state an aspirational value/message like that as an org and then live with 20 years of consequences of the press and your employees calling you out for not living up to it, than not having an ideal at all. My 2 cents.

yes and having worked there, i can say that “do good” was never an aspiration. i think it’s important to be clear about and push back against that. bc of “don’t be evil,” ppl put google into this bucket of “co. trying to do good,” and never interrogated if that was actually true.

Also, "don't be evil" is something, if heard on a date, would be an immediate red flag. Perhaps don't believe people who tell you they aren't evil. They might be lying.
