Individual bedrooms for the kids. Play rooms separate from bedrooms. Backyards. A preference for cul-de-sac-like suburban streets for their kids to play in.

Like who takes care of the kids while at work? How does it differ if they live in non-profit run housing, public housing, if they're tenants, if they're homeowners or if they're living in their parents house, etc.

This is a big consideration for my wife and I as well, as we’re planning to have kids soon. Childcare in SF is as crazy as rent from what I’ve gathered.

SF is easy to have a couple kids at good schools and own a 1500 sqft house. You just need ~$1M/yr of salary to cover the tuition, mortgage, and to save anything. If you don’t care long commutes or bad schools, it’s a bit cheaper.

Not entirely fair, I have friends doing it on merely $300k/year. Fortunately they bought their 1,500sq ft house in the sunset in 2009 and both work 3/day week healthcare jobs with no overlap so they don’t have to pay for child care.
