The city’s cost makes it impossible for people to make long-standing commitments to it and the incumbent residents prefer it that way.

It's not impossible for all. Some are paid highly enough to live here, but they prefer other places when they can stretch their dollar more elsewhere. When people tell me they're giving up rent controlled apts because they desire two extra rooms I have trouble empathizing.

There are ppl who want more and there are pppl who are content w/ the City’s ways. Ppl can make it in SF, it’s a matter of what lifestyle you want to live. Some ppl want to stay comfortable while some of us chase life

The other one that gets me is folks wanting more space for kids. Whenever I hear that I'm flabbergasted. I was raised in a one bdrm apartment, w/my brother. We made it work! Just like you don't *need* a car, folks don't *need* the space .. they just want it. So they leave.

Flabbergasted?? It hardly seems unreasonable for a family to want a living room if they can afford it by moving across the bay. I'm glad your family made it work though.

Even if they have a living room, feeling the need for individual rooms for their kids or for a play room or craziness like that. It makes me empathize with urbanists who eschew cars. To me it's the same as hearing "but I NEED a Hummer"

Sure but having at least one bedroom for the kids to share does not seem like a big ask

No that seems reasonable. But for some reason that's never what I tend to hear, purely anecdotally, from people who want to leave SF for more space. It's always a multiple bedrooms, a backyard, or a play room, or an office, or some spare room that sounds like a suburban luxury.

Yeah I dont think a 2BR is unreasonable. But most of the friends I've had who left HAD a 2 BR and just wanted MORE space. This was nuts to me.

Individual bedrooms for the kids. Play rooms separate from bedrooms. Backyards. A preference for cul-de-sac-like suburban streets for their kids to play in.

Backyards and guest rooms may not strictly be necessary, but separate rooms for kids does not seem to be a luxury. I’m so glad I had a (small) private room in my teenage years as I became an independent person. Different strokes, but seems pretty baseline to me.
