I relate to this story on many levels - and also feeling pretty close to the point where I'm ready to move somewhere else. SF opened up so many opportunities for me and was the first time I felt like I really belonged in a city.

It's probably related to our age (in addition to SF changing). I wonder if younger generations who are just arriving in SF feel much less of an urge to leave.

lol no, you can feel the "transient" status in people who move here for work from Day 1. it's made it really hard for me to find long-term/deep friends etc. bc of that -- i can feel people's lack of attachment to this city and its people...

The city’s cost makes it impossible for people to make long-standing commitments to it and the incumbent residents prefer it that way.

It's not impossible for all. Some are paid highly enough to live here, but they prefer other places when they can stretch their dollar more elsewhere. When people tell me they're giving up rent controlled apts because they desire two extra rooms I have trouble empathizing.

If they’re planning on having kids or taking care of their parents, that’s not an unreasonable ask.

I’ve got married friends with a newborn plus toddler in a studio in SF! That sounds crazy to me!

Different strokes for different folks. I think of you're used to larger spaces you feel you need it. But as someone whow as raised in a smaller space, I don't, nor do i think it is a universal need.

I just left SF with two kids--the space we had was fine for us but the childcare costs of the city also naturally track to housing costs. Going somewhere else reduced that cost by $1000/month so both my husband and I could work. (Sorry to butt in but it's not always just space!)

Oh yeah 2-3K in childcare costs on top of rent/mortgage.

If the decision isn't just space I get it. I also have the luxury/privelige of family nearby so when it comes my time for kids, that childcare cost will likely be nil
