~some personal news~
A month ago I moved to Los Angeles after living in San Francisco for 9 years.
This thread isn’t a slam against the Bay Area. Quite the opposite…

I’m not sure it’s as clear cut as this
. Our budget’s increases are largely useless & long timers are hit hard. I do believe that a massive progressive local income tax would cut high end wages, lower market rate home $, reduce inequality, & better fund infra / affordable homes -
The budget increases are “useless” because SF just runs in place against its unfunded liabilities. The other major Bay Area cities, Oakland and SJ, have it way worse bc they don’t have the same business tax base to offset obligations.

Having been both an LA and SF resident (after London), I sometimes idly speculate if SF’s culture has started to ossify around money as a central value, maybe even since 2008 (a compounding contributor?). Not sure.

SF’s culture is way too complicated to just be about money. Money has certainly been part of it since the very beginning though!

SF is obviously bad in this regard but not first, nor unique. I felt this same effect in Boston 20 years ago where in order to rent an apt you HAVE to pay a broker 1 month’s worth of rent. For doing next to nothing in a tight mkt. Young/ transients subsidize incumbents
