~some personal news~
A month ago I moved to Los Angeles after living in San Francisco for 9 years.
This thread isn’t a slam against the Bay Area. Quite the opposite…

It's not impossible for all. Some are paid highly enough to live here, but they prefer other places when they can stretch their dollar more elsewhere. When people tell me they're giving up rent controlled apts because they desire two extra rooms I have trouble empathizing.
-
If they’re planning on having kids or taking care of their parents, that’s not an unreasonable ask.

Newcomers are basically used to cross subsidize the budget and then are blamed for creating all the problems.

I don't agree "incumbent residents" prefer that. SF overwhelmingly wants more affordability, more housing. It's the political class that isn't delivering that
-
The political class is responding to the incoherent demands of their constituents, who don’t want to make the trade offs necessary to make the city more accessible except to a small # of people who win different kinds of lotteries.

I was very fortunate to find a group of friends who are from the bay or planning to grow roots here. Also not all working in tech. I know that’s not the norm though. The costs are a major factor in whether or not we’re able to stay.
-
Yeah, I wanted to add that too - if you get out of Tech, you’ll meet more folks that are putting down roots. You may also have to go further out beyond SF. I moved to Vallejo and it has been great. Strong sense of community and relatively decent housing costs.

Mercenaries. Full stop. They’re here to accumulate money and GTFO. That’s why we have no sense of “community” now - half of everyone we know is only here until they have a way out.
-
Unf in reality most people I know end up with losing lottery tickets and barely able to pay rent from their salary. Let's not look at the survivorship bias winners.
