Can someone please explain to me who Saul Alinsky is and why Marxist-Leninist wouldn’t be into him? I’m out of the loop on left Twitter today.

He was originally funded by the Catholic Church to counter-organize against the atheist communists who were making headway in organizing working class people in Chicago. He is more complicated than what later generations of alinskyist orgs did.

Generally for Marxists, the main issue is that the Alinsky model focuses on winnable (and therefore, smallish) demands rather than transformation, and avoids ideological struggle and systemic critique.

There is a weirdly great interview with him in Playboy in 1972.

But the Alinskyists have had a lot of influence on liberal-progressive organizing models for decades, so IMO it’s worth it for socialists to understand the model thoroughly.

His book can be read in like 2 hours. It's great!
