Imagine the galaxy brain take of this Marin NIMBY in writing an op-ed titled "Housing is a human right" while opposing @davidchiu's plan to create a regional affordable housing authority that could raise $1.5B for below-market-rate housing. https://calmatters.org/commentary/housing-financialization/ …https://twitter.com/kimmaicutler/status/1154833359672991744 …

Why do would we need a regional affordable housing authority? Oh, I don't know, because Western Bay Area counties like San Mateo Co. do things like approve 72,000 jobs and 3,844 housing units from 2010-2015, which impacts working-class East Bay counties.https://www.kqed.org/news/11730990/new-bill-would-create-a-regional-housing-government-for-the-bay-area …

And yes, the Mill Valley woman who authored the op-ed at the top had to financially help her daughter, a VC, buy a house in Oakland (underscoring that when historically white counties like Marin don't build housing, their kids gentrify other places). https://www.citylab.com/equity/2019/07/nimby-vs-yimby-single-family-zoning-laws-california-housing/594373/ …pic.twitter.com/NzRp0xD1v2

Uh, yeah, so the point is if Mill Valley (median home price = $1.6M) doesn't build housing and its residents' kids go and gentrify Oakland, maybe Oakland should have some regional tax revenue to build affordable housing there (that is decommodified BTW!) https://calmatters.org/commentary/housing-financialization/ …pic.twitter.com/rF8jlDdN8U

Why not just a general purpose regional government instead of a new single purpose entity for every challenge? (land use, planning, transportation, air and water quality, now housing) Ive been flogging this idea for a long time.

Because 10,000 agencies (true!) are something and general purpose regional government is nothing.

yes that line, presented in throw-away fashion, struck me when I read this. I wanted to know about her buying a home for her CEO daughter and not thinking maybe there was something wrong with state housing policy.

You’re too kind. “Gentrify” is euphemism for “displace historic neighborhoods of people with fewer capital resource, i.e., black, Latinx, indigenous, and disabled folks.” These self-proclaimed uber-progressive anti-housing people can take their doublespeak nonsense elsewhere.
