This @SFjkdineen story about how a 425-unit project near Caltrain was killed with a single city council vote is infuriating.https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/1-council-vote-kills-San-Bruno-housing-plan-near-14112359.php …

“The rejection comes as San Bruno, like much of the Peninsula, is rapidly adding jobs — but little housing. Between 2010 and 2015, San Mateo County added 72,000 jobs and 3,844 housing units, about 19 jobs for every new home.”

☝️☝️☝️ That’s actually the most infuriating part. You don’t like a housing development? OK whatever. But you approve 70K jobs and don’t approve a 425-unit project?! That’s practically criminal to your non-property owning voters and adjacent counties and cities of the Bay Area.

Not all the companies are pro-housing. Genentech & other biotech firms deserve more attention and shaming for their NIMBY lawsuit blocking any housing east of 101 in South San Francisco: https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/Developer-puts-Oyster-Point-housing-plan-on-hold-12795497.php …

Gosh, it's almost as if this were a collective action problem. Maybe cities—having collectively demonstrated inadequate action, bad faith, or open hostility toward new housing—shouldn't be tasked with solving this state-wide problem. @cayimby @penforeveryone

What should cities be tasked with then if they can’t properly handle land use? It’s clear that they have failed, but what else can they do properly?

what I really don’t understand about the logic is how the 70k jobs don’t affect traffic, but 425 units right on public transit do

70k jobs means more tax $$$ for my city and no new voters getting to disagree with me about how it's spent.
