Sasha was trying to say something nice and hopeful about the work we’re doing and you had to come in with this? I mean, fine, but believe it or not I doubt we’ll resolve this on Twitter

ok, when you get the $2.6 trillion to socialize all residential real estate from SF down through San Jose and somehow voters are OK with having their life savings expropriated by the state -- since they seem fine with building addl housing at no financial cost to them -- call me.

you’re an incredibly intelligent person, but your entire MO online has been poo-poohing even incrementalist calls for change? if Upton Sinclair wrote The Jungle on Twitter you’d tell him the pension of guys getting decapitated by meat grinders was dependent on blade production

I support different policies at different govt levels. Federal policy needs to be more progressive, which is why I'd side with AOC/Saikat etc. But city policy is *very* different because there is inherent leakiness to both public service provision & taxation at the city level.

also usually the socialist housing suggestion at solely the municipal level is usually a bad faith argument. If you say only non-market housing can be built going forward in SF, that actually perversely protects financial returns on all existing homes.

The fact that you're no more able to imagine the possibility of the truly substantive changes we need, than you are able to understand any possible socialism other than your one experience of something you somehow misunderstand as exhausting all possible forms, is your failure

that I grew up among generations of community/family members/friends/ who actually lived through variations of these ideas before? And have also lived for various periods of time in Europe (and respect and want to adopt aspects of their welfare systems in California?)

I’ve grown up watching post-socialist post-1991 Indian cities, including Delhi which I love more than anywhere on earth, become smog-choked deathtraps running out of groundwater, while poor people choke and starve to death outside of Western-style megamalls. don’t you dare

question was meant more at Gibsopi. And... again, conversely, I saw Vietnam out of the 1990s and 2000s engage in economic liberalization and it was the most optimistic I've ever seen a culture. It's... complicated.

Yes, I know you were trying to pull rank. Ushanti's response is why i think that's silly. There are endless material experiences of the world; your story isn't the only real one

yeah it’s complicated! I have no intention of invalidating your family’s experience, Kim-Mai. but if you actually assumed the same complications of us, you would never have responded to Sasha’s innocuous tweet about housing socialism in SF this way in the first place.
