A current SF Supervisor said this to me in private: "There will be a recession, and many of your members, well, they just won’t be here. They won’t have jobs. They’ll leave...I’m not saying our best days are behind us…but maybe the Bay Area isn’t going to be so attractive.”https://twitter.com/shane_bauer/status/1147197354401042433 …

The building industry never really recovered from the last recession. Lot of construction workers, architects, contractors, etc retired early or went into different line of work. One of the modular manufacturers closed. Part of the reason construction costs are high now.

A recession won't solve San Francisco's housing crisis. Might lower costs for couple years at most. What people are really wishing for is another city to become the world's tech hub. The question is then: do we want an internet built on San Francisco's values or something worse?

We have an Internet built of the values of exploitive capitalism—it doesn’t matter where it’s located. But recessions don’t lower rents. They may go flat, but they don’t fall.

It does matter. There's an alternate timeline where tech is based elsewhere, server farms brag about being powered by "clean" coal, mainstream websites ban LGBTQ users, and proof of citizenship is required to use online services.

You're talking like any alternative to 'SF values' would be inferior, but... 'Silicon Valley' is the world's byword for hypocritical inequality and enterprise of dubious social, financial merit (ridehail, food delivery, scooter renting to name a few)

People in tech view themselves very differently than the rest of us view them.
