Housing that takes 15 years to build and that only 28 out of 4,000 people can win the lottery for?https://sf.curbed.com/2019/5/22/18625218/oakland-housing-crisis-affordable-homes-schaaf …

(We should also build that kind of housing too but let’s be real about what the odds are, how long and hard it is to finance and how many units can be produced that way per year.)

If you don’t organize against the odds nothing happens. if you invest your intelligence & energy giving people a vision of a future to believe in, something better may happen. why spend a short life trending to the lowest common denominator?

The candidate you’re talking about is promising people Vienna, which took WWI and a pandemic to create. Public housing could be reinvigorated, at a federal level, not at a district supervisor level (esp bc cities can’t control who migrates to them).

yeah I don’t really know how many varieties of nightmare scenarios it takes to sit here and not try

Why is it the supposedly feckless technocrats get accused of not trying when they're also pushing the biggest policy reforms for more social housing. - Public banks (Chiu, AB 857) - Article 34 repeal (Wiener, SCA-1) - By-right 100% AH; all city land rezoned for 100% AH (Breed)

These are all barriers that need to be smashed and institutions that need to be built if we're ever going to get serious about social housing, esp true public housing. I know Wiener/Chiu count as progressive wrt state politics, but why is Breed having to carry this water in SF.

the obstacle I've run into most personally is that we privatized and rehabbed most of our public housing, and most people in charge are happy with the result (except residents in places like Midtown, but not gonna get into that right now).

also, we need someone who's willing to raise property taxes and I don't think any elected official in SF will touch that

I'll be pulling hard for Evolve CA's 2020 split-roll prop. It'll be interesting to see if any politicians get on board.

I know about 13 and 218 but then why is there so much fearmongering around bonds? (recalling a Breed campaign mailer sent about Kim's $1B housing bond proposal that said "SHE'S GONNA RAISE UR PROPERTY TAXES")
