In SF, "the largest increase in homeless individuals — 68 percent — was driven by people living in their vehicles. In November, the city undertook a concerted effort to disperse people living in their vehicles."https://missionlocal.org/2019/05/sf-homeless-count-up-17-percent-driven-by-vehicle-dwellers/ …
Some early reporting Southern Californian counties are seeing comparable increases. Orange County is up 43 percent. http://www.ocregister.com/homeless-count-in-orange-county-shows-increase-but-with-more-accurate-picture-of-whos-out-there … LA comes out at the end of the month.

Counts from around the state. Wow.https://twitter.com/samueldodge/status/1129413797657997313?s=21 …

Stockton’s population of people experiencing homelessness tripled. LA’s numbers were postponed until next week.https://www.recordnet.com/news/20190528/number-of-homeless-residents-in-stockton-sj-soars …
This is interesting news from outside California. Seattle's numbers dropped for the first time since 2012.https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/homeless/steep-drop-in-king-countys-homeless-youth-annual-homeless-count-shows/ …
Los Angeles’ numbers came out today. Similar % increase to San Francisco. Anybody compiling 2019 counts from other major American metros? This may be a California-centric phenomenon. https://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-homeless-count-encampment-affordable-housing-2019-results-20190604-story.html …pic.twitter.com/UFtkOHDydL
This raw homelessness count figure puts LA at a similar overall count to NYC even though NY has more than double the overall general population.
Meanwhile, NY's unsheltered numbers are down 2% from two years ago to 3,588 people. https://www1.nyc.gov/site/dhs/about/press-releases/fewer-experiencing-unsheltered-homelessness-2019.page …
Technically, NY has 78,000 people who qualify as homeless in its systems, but because it's a "Right to Shelter" city, you don't visually see as many people sleeping on the street:https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/30/nyregion/homeless-nyc.html …

More on the difference between how East Coast cities and West Coast cities address homelessness here. (The LA numbers in one of the charts in this thread are wrong, though.)https://twitter.com/kimmaicutler/status/1070482286808682496 …

Uh, clarification: This is very much a *California* issue. I haven't seen devastating double digit percentage increases anywhere outside of this state yet. (Please correct me if I'm wrong.)https://twitter.com/mattdpearce/status/1135984110034464773 …
Kim-Mai Cutler added,
Denver does not have a legal right to shelter yet our homelessness rates are *dramatically* lower than SF, NY, Seattle, DC, and LA and have gone down in recent years despite a booming population.
