Today is a sad day. Federal homeless counts, done once every other year, all across the Bay Area have reached staggering highs.
At more than 8,000 people, San Francisco now has the highest numbers since the Willie Brown-era, or right around when @gavinnewsom took office.https://twitter.com/hknightsf/status/1129155331689332736 …

This raw homelessness count figure puts LA at a similar overall count to NYC even though NY has more than double the overall general population.

Meanwhile, NY's unsheltered numbers are down 2% from two years ago to 3,588 people. https://www1.nyc.gov/site/dhs/about/press-releases/fewer-experiencing-unsheltered-homelessness-2019.page …

Technically, NY has 78,000 people who qualify as homeless in its systems, but because it's a "Right to Shelter" city, you don't visually see as many people sleeping on the street:https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/30/nyregion/homeless-nyc.html …

More on the difference between how East Coast cities and West Coast cities address homelessness here. (The LA numbers in one of the charts in this thread are wrong, though.)https://twitter.com/kimmaicutler/status/1070482286808682496 …

The few I’ve looked at suggest it is a high cost region trend. Chicago hasn’t released 2019 yet- 2108 was around 5400, 1400 unsheltered https://www.chicago.gov/content/dam/city/depts/fss/supp_info/Homeless/2018PITSummaryReportFinal100418.pdf … Houston 2018 # up to around 4200, 1500 unsheltered, but had been falling before hurricane- http://www.homelesshouston.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Final_2018_PIT_FactSheet_Digital_3.pdf …
