As in, yes, it costs more to build a backyard granny flat in the Bay Area than it does to buy the median priced home in America. Construction is expensive and the permitting process is unpredictable and time consuming in the Bay Area, folks!

How does the cost scale between an ADU and triplex or quadplex?

Yea, heard a 300k quote recently for San Mateo- small unit and luckily near public transit. That’s the initial estimate, doubt actual costs come in lower.
