I have to admit, I don't feel a lot of sympathy for the CS grad student who is making $30k per year instead of $500k at Google. They *chose* to be there to get a PhD. Unlike an undergrad degree, a PhD is a real luxury - it doesn't lead to a better ROI on salaries later...

There are so many broader implications to your argument that are troubling. - Not everyone is a CS grad student. Other fields are vital and important for moving research/science forward. - Basic research is the seed corn that fuels the R&D, entrepreneurial innovation later.

Undercompensating it now... means we lose decades later. - Assuming that everyone should make <$30K for years probably means the field will be less diverse, since promising students from middle/lower-income backgrounds may have family needs they have to compensate for...
