But they also are getting a PhD! They don't have to be there.

I have to admit, I don't feel a lot of sympathy for the CS grad student who is making $30k per year instead of $500k at Google. They *chose* to be there to get a PhD. Unlike an undergrad degree, a PhD is a real luxury - it doesn't lead to a better ROI on salaries later...

Institutions do like to exploit the ambiguity of "student" vs. "employee" for graduate students to their own advantage. But I'm not sure that unionizing really makes much sense for most graduate students.
-
They are in temporary positions that last only ~5 or 6 years, maximum. If the union negotiates a new contract w/ improved conditions for them, will they even see the benefits?

As a graduate student worker, I make $15,750 a year.

I was in this position as a graduate student. There were horrible problems with my program, but none that the union seemed able to help with. I committed to the low salary when I joined, I never thought pay/benefits were unfair. Career track & management OTOH was… complicated.

…obviously I'm speaking to my own personal experience, I'm sure there are people impacted by this ruling who are in a very different position.

Tuition doesn’t pay my rent. When I was a grad student at Stony Brook, our union was the only reason I was getting a stipend even close to being able to live on. Prior to the grad students unionizing, the stipend was a ridiculously low amount and PhD students had to go into debt.
