The 50s were a real "go forth and multiply" decade. It was like everyone converted to Catholicism or something.

my Catholic grandparents had to have 12 kids to maintain their lead back then (it also helped that huge Victorian houses and Jesuit university education for 12 were available at a cost affordable to an encyclopedia salesman back then)
