Will the new wave of institutional critique land in San Francisco? I researched SFMOMA trustees' investment portfolios, finding similarities to the patrons drawing protest in New York, and took the temperature of local arts figures regarding toxic donors.https://missionlocal.org/2019/05/toxic-donors-are-coming-under-fire-at-art-museums-but-not-in-liberal-san-francisco-what-will-sfmoma-do/ …

In New York, just one Whitney museum trustee's ties to teargas have prompted a near staff revolt and a cascade of protests. That trustee, Warren Kanders, supported SFMOMA's new Andy Warhol show in its original exhibition, linking the New York art world turmoil to the Bay Area.

At a time of dismantling public monuments to injustice and exploitation nationwide, museum staffers are eyeing the “generous supporters” named on the walls of their own workplaces. Yet SFMOMA, despite its progressive posturing, hasn't received the same scrutiny as museums in NY.

I found the SFMOMA is decorated with the names of donors who profit from war and business ties to the Trump administration. Dena Beard: “There’s no such thing as a gift. We all know it’s a negotiation of debt. And right now SFMOMA is in debt to some very dangerous people.”

Thanks much to

After getting into venture, I got to see more of how interesting/weird institutional capital can be. We should be asking more questions about how pension funds, charitable foundations, philanthropies and universities fund themselves. Wish it were better reported.

No doubt! Seems like private foundations' connections to nonprofit news outlets can chill coverage a bit.
