I feel good about this anti-facial recognition legislation from @AaronPeskin. Tell me why I might be wrong.https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/14/us/facial-recognition-ban-san-francisco.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share …

Since SF doesn’t bother to enforce laws, this seems like a great way for the city to continue to do the same while giving itself some nice PR

I think there's a lot of room for cultural norms around facial recognition to be shaped and normalized right now and if that involves some symbolic municipal and state measures, so be it.

We symbolically banned a thing we don’t use. Maybe the Supes could get to work on solving an actual problem at some point.

I don't understand how you can go to DC in the context of policy makers having gotten involved so late in content moderation, speech issues and be frustrated that they haven't been up to speed for a long time, and then be mad that folks are getting more proactive now.

What? I don’t go to DC because I think all tech is bad, and I don’t go to DC to encourage legislators to ban technology. I don’t think this is an example of a legislator getting up to speed.

why would you want SFPD to use facial recognition products? If it’s to solve property crime, how would you balance that against their history with communities of color in the city?

i didn't say i *wanted* them to use it. i am uninformed about how effective it is, as i bet most of the Supes are. I said i think this is a pointless waste of effort. More PR spin from the anti-tech grandstander in chief. it appeals to AI fears while changing nothing.

How can you say it is pointless when you say you are uninformed? As someone very informed on this very important topic, I'm disappointed that you're being so dismissive and outspoken about it. Please put in the time to learn about this issue before commenting further.

Do you think a symbolic ban on a technology the city not only does not use, but likely would never have used, is the best use of your legislators' time and energy? Because I don't. And that is what I said.

It’s not hypothetical anymore. https://www.axios.com/ai-video-surveillance-schools-a5845755-9c68-480a-a4d6-5e075a4d17b4.html …

I'm reading the text. https://sfgov.legistar.com/View.ashx?M=F&ID=7206781&GUID=38D37061-4D87-4A94-9AB3-CB113656159A … It also appears to regulate things like license plate readers and drones with cameras? Private citizens exempt. That is a problematic situation right there.
