My hobby horse: If China really wants to build a database of a billion or so citizens' faces, wouldn't it be trivial to add a few million foreigners too? Couple of fake ATM cameras on Wall Street, say, or a high-res drone flight over a military base in Texas or Africa, etc.

I assume they are. If you haven't seen the fidelity from one high-res camera on a tower in Shanghai, check it out. And if they are, it's quite possible that we and Russia are too. (Oh God, keep me from a "Losing the face race" joke.)

Don't all iPhones have facial recognition baked in? Hopefully none of that gets misused.

when you go through customs to get into the country, they get your fingerprints and face too, so... they definitely have millions of foreigners already
