Thanks to @kimmaicutler for highlighting Stanford's racism. Sentences later he "call[s] attention to the importance of steam communication between California & Eastern Asia, whereby ... the course of exchange, instead of being against us, would probably be in our favor." Remember Leland Stanford, who called Asian-Americans the "dregs" of "an inferior race" in his inaugural speech as California governor before it turned out that he would be absolutely dependent on their labor to finish the Transcontinental Railroad. http://governors.library.ca.gov/addresses/08-Stanford.html … https://twitter.com/DavidChiu/status/1126909703181651969 …

As an alum of said "Junior Univ," I am chastened, but I'd bet we could find similar dirt in the history of the Presidents & Regents of UC. The real point is: California's history is not an exceptional history when it comes to race in the USA.

Stanford was briefly a UC Regent but I think was pressured off politically and so he just went his own way and started his own private institution after the death of his only son.

The most interesting period is after the Transcontinental but before Harriman took over the SP in 1905. The Big Four, wealthy beyond imagination, split up and truly shaped the California we know today. Analogous to the PayPal mafia.pic.twitter.com/zo7BXYEpPv
