You know who doesn’t vote? Kids and future residents who aren’t here yet. In place like SF where voting for your narrow interest is bipartisan sport, you will perpetually see “make the kids pay for it” happen.

Local politicians are the entry level rung in the ladder. They are usually ambitious, which means they are least likely to have enough poilitical courage to say no to ideas in the intersection of populist and stupid.

This is why fixing this at the state level to strongly reign in local control has to happen. Almost all these problems are “tradegy of the commons”. There is little personal upside to a small town mayor endorsing a
