I understand the purpose of the Uber/Lyft driver strike, which is to raise awareness of low pay, etc. But I don't see how striking for one day -- and saying everyone will be back to work on Thursday -- causes enough corporate pain to create change.

My guess would be to demonstrate organizational capacity and become more ambitious from there.

I feel like a very Uber-y thing to do would be to convert the 'Tips' option into some kind of "Living Wage" button and then put the onus on the consumer to choose whether to pay the driver a suggested living wage fare.

I wouldn’t put a lot of faith in humanity - I asked an Uber driver yesterday what percent of people tip and he told me it was about 30%.

That is the point. This is the contradiction of service labor in America. Americans want cheap services but don’t want to pay the wages that would mean that workers in restaurants, child care, transportation, etc. get a living wage.

But you could also incentivize it; passengers could get higher ratings or a public “living wage” badge

The platform could publish monthly stats on metros that have the greatest percentage of riders that pay living wages. Could collaborate w metro govs on establishing both effective minimum and living wage floors.

Probably easiest thing would be to let me set a default tip % and just add it automatically

That doesn't meaningfully change their political positioning vis a vis driver wages/labor in numerous court cases/pending legislation both in the US and abroad. Uber and Lyft are in enough of a position where they can instigate consumer behavior change/national conversation.

Soon you'll be able to specify political party and get a wildly different experience
