Retiring to the bay area is way different than retiring in the bay area. When those adjusted proerty taxes hit most people are forced to sell. $2,000 to $13,000 a year will catch up real fast.

& cost of living keeps climbing because real estate & labor are scarce & pricey - impacts everything. Groceries, restaurants, all services (hc, trades etc) - everything $$. You are options to live cheap(ish) almost everywhere else (incl NYC, Boston, Seattle etc) but not here.

My wife and I (50's) always said we weren't going anywhere, except maybe we'd consider moving someplace warmer in our 80's. "Like the Mission." But lately she's been saying she might want to move somewhere else, like Amsterdam, because SF's car-choked streets are a nightmare.
