My dad grew up in Vistacion Valley and went to City College for free. His access to that education is a big part of why I now have a job and can (sort of) afford to have family in the Bay Area.

This represents a huge (and negative) change in the compact between state and people. When I went to
@UCBerkeley in the 1970s, tuition was @$600 per year. The state invested in me with trust I would contribute economically and civically. Now? -
By the time I was deciding on grad schools in 1986, I realized I couldn't afford to go to Berkeley and went to Stanford instead because Stanford gave financial support.

To be fair the Bay area wasn't printing billionaires like it is today. A lot of the new housing is being bought up by people moving in for the new Gold Rush.
