I think about this. If I end up caring for one of parents, I don’t have the space for another person and I can’t afford a bigger house.

Pre-Prop 13, older retirees would sell their homes (often because they were on a fixed income and the property taxes would have gradually risen over time) and then they'd move to an apartment or condo, letting their larger home accommodate growing families. I prefer that world.

On the other hand, my 87-year-old grandmother and her husband spent a decade living in a four-bedroom San Jose home with a living room, a family room, and a formal dining room. The house was far too large for just the two of them but it was paid off and taxes were low.
