So, uh, how did your taxes all come out this season without the SALT deduction?https://twitter.com/ByJudyLin/status/1116130136221335552 …

I'm surprised I haven't seen more members of Congress -- especially from CA and NY -- arguing to bring this back. This seems like a bipartisan win to lower taxes.

The SALT and mortgage interest caps are progressive policies (vast majority of benefits of those deductions go to the rich), so in general Dem politicians should be ideologically in favor of keeping them.

MID is regressive not progressive. SALT is more about blue states that elect to have higher service levels than red states and not penalizing states and their residents for choosing larger govt.

We agree about MID (my sentence was awkwardly worded. My bad). 88% of SALT deductions went to households making > 100k so I stand behind saying that capping it is progressive.

I don’t think Dem politicians feel that way about SALT; they want to preserve a state’s ability to raise taxes for higher levels of services and experimenting with pushing progressive policy forward like universal health care. It would be harder to fund programs like that here.
