The absurd thing about single-family homeowners in the suburban flats protecting their $3M homes on the peninsula is they're de facto sentencing people to 3+ hour mega-commutes, living in less economically mobile parts of the US & places they might die in the line of wildfire...https://twitter.com/JWilliamsAP/status/1116377750896463872 …

Every single interview with a tech CEO/ VC should ask what they are doing to help tackle the housing crisis in Bay Area. I am amazed how little leadership the tech industry is showing to address this problem.

Uh..... it's the government that controls land-use, what gets build, what doesn't, what housing is subsidized, what isn't, etc.

yes. Govt will listen to voters. Tech industry has a huge voice - and they need to promote housing and pro-housing positions - and champion the cause.

imagine if all top VCs come out and say there is a huge crisis in Bay Area - and Bay Area will not be competitive for the next decade if we don't fix housing. may be that will move the needle among NIMBYs ..

honestly all mega tech companies have done a huge disservice.. they have been happy to rally local govt. to permit mega campuses - but failed in demanding a plan for housing.

that is just not factually true. Google has been trying to build 10,000 units at North Bayshore for years and Mountain View had a pro-housing council from 2016 to last year, but then an anti-housing council just got voted in in November.

Other than facts, is there another reason that NIMBY voters aren’t primarily responsible prioritizing people who got here early over everyone who just arrived or wants to move here?

Imagine if top 50-100 tech CEOs issued a joint statement in support for SB50. I am sure that would move the needle in public support - which will move the politics.

Love it. I'd take any statement from anyone in support of SB50, tech leaders very much included. I don't think they created this problem, but you're right that they can at least lend their voices to the solution.

there was an entire lobby day like two weeks ago where founders, investors met with 20 state legislators in Sacramento... so yeah, stuff is happening.
