I think people always comparing the wrong thing. What’s this vs. doing nothing considering that 500,000 new Californians are born in this state every year?
-
Well I’m not saying do nothing. That’s not an acceptable answer either. There is a housing affordability crisis in CA & there is a serious environmental cost and traffic cost to current growth patterns. I’m a YIMBY (or I erroneously thought myself to be one) & change is needed.

In any event, given the sprawl of Southern California, even the current metro rail is not enough to move people around & get them out of their cars. And actually, I have several other substantive objections but I’ve already tweeted at you too much. Thank you for reading. (14/)

Since you asked, one of the big generators of opposition is the inclusion of bus lines as transit. There’s a few reasons that Angelenos are having a collective freak out over this provision (and my apologies for not citing the exact subsection). First, it mandates rezoning (1/)

In neighborhoods that are purely suburban in character (no apartments aside from granny flats) and no mixed use and where few of any of the residents use the bus. As opposed to let’s say Alamo Square, there isn’t a mix of buildings. (2/)

Now, in the experience of building high density residential in neighborhoods like this, that residential high density isn’t actually TOD because the residents drive. Wilshire Boulevard between Comstock & Glendon is best example even with dedicated bus lane. So you might ask (3/)

Well, why are these bus lanes there? Why are there high frequency bus routes (as defined by
#SB50) there? Well they get used almost exclusively by domestic workers, minimum wage workers, students. So this presents a twofold problem. You’re likely going to mandate non TOD (4/)Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Alternatively, the wealthy & well connected residents will use their political power & clout to reduce bus service times in order to protect their neighborhoods. This leads to another problem. The wealthiest Angelenos who generally don’t use public transportation have been (5/)

And just to put a fine point on it. I speak of local Angelenos (Brentwood, Bel Air, Holmby Hills, Hancock Park) who are more politically left wing at local level as opposed to those in independent Beverly Hills which is more conservative at local level (7/).
