One interesting thing about homelessness in SF is that the city only recently began increasing its shelter bed count again after decreasing it by >400 beds. in a 2004 plan, the city prioritized permanent housing > temporary sheltershttps://twitter.com/MikeIsaac/status/1113946424801030144 …

Another interesting point: one myth that is oft-repeated is most of SF's homeless are shipped in from idaho or wherever b/c the services are so good here. Actually the vast majority (90%) were w/in California when they became homeless, and 69% lived in SF

Ironically, SF has its own program to give homeless people funds to get out of SF! It's called Homeward Bound and aimed to reunite them with families/friendspic.twitter.com/6RkeG8PjUM

How does SF's low shelter-count affect its unsheltered population vs other cities? I'm glad you asked It turns out that in cities which have a mandate to provide shelter to anyone who wants it ... the unsheltered count is much lowerpic.twitter.com/jeiqCRUaHn
