I finished this book yesterday. Parts of it are really salient. Real estate *does* dominate now (tho Stein downplays that it’s always been present as a sector and claims it relatively outweighs the impact industry had).

Zoning came about in the first place partly to protect property values for real estate interests!

Such a thesis implies that Prop. 13 should have weakened 'real estate''s influence on California government/planners, by shifting a big portion of the tax base onto income rather than property taxes, no?

I actually find that plausible, but I suspect this author wouldn't hold up Cali as the jurisdiction where the power of real estate has been broken
